Alexander Zverev, 29, has secured the year-end world number one ranking for the first time in his career, becoming the oldest first-time year-end number one. The German's place at the top was sealed by Carlos Alcaraz's defeat at the Shanghai Masters and by the knee injury that ended reigning number one Jannik Sinner's season early. In a historic campaign, Zverev has won Roland Garros and the US Open, reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open and made the final at Wimbledon.

"It's been a fantastic season for me winning in Paris and New York and knowing that I will finish the year on top of the rankings is just a dream come true," Zverev said after sealing the top spot. The German reflected on the hard road back from the serious ankle injury he suffered in 2022, and has crowned the best season of his career by guaranteeing his place at the summit of the ATP rankings.
